Right-hander Seth Lugo and the Padres have agreed to a two-year, $15 million deal, sources told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The deal includes an opt-out for Lugo after next season as well as performance bonuses, per Feinsand. The Padres have not confirmed the news.
Lugo, 33, has spent his entire seven-year MLB career with the Mets, posting a 3.48 ERA with 508 strikeouts over 494 2/3 innings in 275 appearances (38 starts). He pitched solely out of the bullpen the past two seasons with New York, though San Diego is expected to stretch him out as a starter, joining a rotation that features Yu Darvish, Blake Snell and Joe Musgrove.
Though his fastball averaged 94.4 mph last year, Lugo is known for his impressive curveball, which ranks in the 99th percentile in spin rate.
