SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants abruptly postponed a scheduled press conference to introduce shortstop Carlos Correa at Oracle Park on Tuesday morning.
The Giants did not provide a reason for the delay, but a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand that the team is “waiting on results” for unspecified tests. Ronald Blum of the Associated Press reported that a medical issue was flagged during Correa’s physical, which took place on Monday.
Correa, who agreed to a 13-year, $350 million deal with the Giants last week, was expected to be introduced at 11 a.m. PT on Tuesday, marking the club’s first in-person press conference at Oracle Park since 2019. At 8:15 a.m. PT, the Giants sent out a one-sentence release saying the event had been postponed. Correa’s scheduled appearance with the club’s flagship radio station, KNBR 680, was canceled, as well.
When reached for comment, a Giants spokesperson said the organization had no additional information to provide.
Correa, 28, dealt with back issues earlier in his career, but he’s averaged 142 games played in the past two seasons, with his Twins tenure only interrupted by two freak occurrences — a bout of COVID-19 and a bruised finger sustained on a hit-by-pitch.
The Giants have not officially announced Correa’s deal, but they showed their willingness to make a long-term commitment to the two-time All-Star by giving him the fourth-largest contract in Major League history.
The megadeal easily ranks as the biggest in club history, surpassing the nine-year, $167 million extension Buster Posey signed in March 2013. It also exceeded Francisco Lindor’s $341 million deal for the largest shortstop contract by total value and tied Bryce Harper for the longest free-agent contract in history.
