Dec. 22: 1B Eric Hosmer released; SS/2B Jeter Downs claimed by Nationals
One week after he was designated for assignment, Hosmer was released by the Red Sox on Thursday. Boston acquired Hosmer from the Padres at the Aug. 2 Trade Deadline, hoping he could help the team make the playoffs. The Red Sox faded, and Hosmer injured his back, hitting .244 in 14 games around the ailment. The Padres are responsible for nearly all of the $39 million he is due over the last three seasons of his contract.
Downs, the highly touted prospect in the Mookie Betts trade with the Dodgers, was never able to get his bat going, hitting below .200 at Triple-A over the past two seasons. More>>
Dec. 16: RHP Wyatt Mills acquired from Royals in exchange for Minor League RHP
Mills, 27, posted a 4.60 ERA between the Mariners and the Royals in 2022. Selected by Seattle in the third round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of Gonzaga, the right-hander has a 6.21 ERA in 38 Major League appearances. Wallace, 24, was acquired from the Rockies on Sept. 18, 2020. He spent the entire ’22 season with Double-A Portland, posting a 3.81 ERA in 47 appearances. More >>
Dec. 15: OF Masataka Yoshida signed to five-year, $90-million contract
On the same day the Orix Buffaloes posted Yoshida, the Red Sox swiftly swooped in and agreed to terms with the left-handed hitter on a contract. Yoshida, an on-base machine, is expected to split time between left field and DH for the Sox. During a solid career with Orix, the 29-year-old had a line of .327/.421/.539 with 133 homers and 467 RBIs in 762 games. Boston paid a $15.375 million posting fee to the Buffaloes based on the $90 million contract for Yoshida. The posting fee does not count toward the club’s Competitive Balance Tax payroll. More >>
Dec. 13: Free-agent RHP Kenley Jansen signed to two-year, $32-million contract
In Jansen, the Red Sox get the first true bullpen anchor they’ve had since Craig Kimbrel left via free agency after the 2018 season. Jansen led the National League by notching 41 saves in ’22, and he won a World Series with the Dodgers in ’20. The 35-year-old has 391 career saves. More >>
Dec. 8: Free-agent RHP Chris Martin signed to two-year, $17.5 million contract
In the first significant move to upgrade a bullpen that was one of the worst in the Majors last season, Martin brings instant credibility, given the success he has had the last few years. The 36-year-old is a control specialist. In 60 appearances split between the Cubs and the Dodgers last season, Martin fanned 74 and walked five in 56 innings while recording a 3.05 ERA. More >>
