New Met Kodai Senga has dinner with former Yankee Masahiro Tanaka

Could this be the passing of the torch from one Japanese New York starter to the next?

Over the holidays, former Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka sat down for dinner with newly acquired Mets starting pitcher Kodai Senga.

Though the two have worn different pinstripes in New York, they have shared a dugout in the past. Tanaka and Senga were teammates for Japan in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, where Japan won the gold medal, defeating the U.S., 2-0, in the gold medal game. Senga pitched an inning of scoreless relief in the contest, striking out one and walking one.

“Went to eat in NY in December with [Kodai Senga] who joined the Mets,” Tanaka posted to Instagram with a picture of the two shaking hands and smiling.

Tanaka enjoyed a great career with the crosstown Yankees. In seven seasons in New York, he pitched to a 3.74 ERA with a 78-46 record.

If there was anyone for Senga to get wisdom from about his upcoming tenure in New York, it would be Tanaka.
