Gary Sanchez released by Giants with ex-Yankee’s future uncertain

Gary Sanchez’s time with the Giants is already over.

After the former Yankees catcher joined San Francisco on a minor-league deal on March 31, the Giants released Sanchez from their Triple-A roster on Tuesday.

The Athletic reported that Sanchez, who played for the Dominican Republic during this year’s World Baseball Classic, had an opt-out in his contract.

In 16 games for Triple-A Sacramento, the 30-year-old hit just .164 with no home runs, one double, 19 strikeouts and a .501 OPS.

It’s unclear what the next move will be for the two-time All-Star after that rough stretch.

After a roller-coaster six-year stint as the Yankees’ catcher, they traded Sanchez and Gio Urshela to the Twins before the 2022 season for Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Ben Rortvedt.

In 128 games with Minnesota last season, Sanchez hit .205 with a .659 OPS, 16 home runs, 61 RBIs and 136 strikeouts.

Sanchez burst onto the MLB scene as a rookie in 2016, slashing .299/.376/.657 with 20 home runs and 42 RBIs in 53 games, finishing second in the AL Rookie of the Year voting behind Michael Fulmer.

The following season, Sanchez earned his first All-Star nod while slashing .278/.345/.531 with 33 home runs and 90 RBIs in 122 games.

The ensuing four seasons were rocky, as inconsistency at the plate and defensive deficiencies ultimately doomed his tenure in The Bronx.

The Yankees currently have Jose Trevino and Kyle Higashioka at catcher.

The Twins decided to not tender Sanchez a contract after last season and are now going with Christian Vazquez and Ryan Jeffers behind the plate.

Blake Sabol and Joey Bart have split time at catcher for the Giants.
