Ex-MLB players rip WFAN’s Craig Carton, Evan Roberts for Rays cheating claims

by admin

A trio of former MLB players were aghast that WFAN afternoon drive hosts Craig Carton and Evan Roberts implied the Rays were cheating.

After the Rays got the better of the Yankees over the weekend to reach a 28-7 record at the start of the season, Roberts said there was “something suspicious” about the team while Carton chimed in, tongue-in-cheek, that they were “probably cheating.”

The Rays have gotten astounding production out of journeyman players and Roberts said he was “very skeptical” of how they were accomplishing this.

On the digital baseball show “Foul Territory,” former big leaguers Todd Frazier, A.J. Pierzynski and Erik Kratz took turns teeing off on the top-rated New York hosts.

“You can’t just be blurting that out, saying, ‘Hey, listen, the Tampa Bay Rays must be cheating because they’re winning so many games.’ I know it’s frustrating,” Frazier said, as covered by Awful Announcing. “I know, Evan, you say you’re not a Yankees fan. I understand, but you can’t just be blurting that stuff out, man, when there’s no evidence.”

A.J. Pierzynski intimated that the hosts were just saying crazy things to drive ratings.

“I know this is big in New York markets and sports radio, just saying random stuff to get people to tune in. That’s an absolutely horrible take,” Pierzynski said.

“You know what the most horrible thing is? At the beginning when [Roberts] goes, ‘I’m not saying they’re cheating, but …’”

Speaking to host Scott Braun, Pierzynski continued, “What did I say about … but? Anything you say before but doesn’t count … Well, guess what? Gerrit Cole had a 6-0 lead and blew it. So, you’re saying they cheated because they scored six off Gerrit Cole and came back to win the game?”

Former MLB players Todd Frazier, A.J. Pierzynski and Erik Kratz blasted WFAN’s “Carton & Roberts” for speculating that the Rays are cheating.

Kratz, meanwhile, delved into name-calling.

“It is radio. We have it here in Philly,” Kratz said.

“If you watched the barometer of ‘They stink, they’re the best’…it’s just a rollercoaster. There’s so much content, especially when you’re talking about baseball. There’s so much content to be had. You don’t need to say something like this. You’re such a troll saying this, that you know, you know for a fact that when you had your meeting…and then you just get some clickbait. Like, have some evidence!”
