Gary Sánchez will be joining his third organization in 2023, after he was claimed off of waivers by the Padres, the team announced on Monday.
Sánchez arrives in San Diego after being designated for assignment by the Mets. He appeared in just three games for New York and recorded one hit and one RBI. He started the season with the Giants but did not appear in a Major League game for them.
The backstop is a two-time All-Star and former Silver Slugger winner who spent his best years with the Yankees. San Diego’s catching situation has been in flux with Luis Campusano on the injured list since early May due to a thumb injury. Austin Nola has struggled at the plate with a .434 OPS, and Brett Sullivan has been splitting time with him behind the plate.
