Mark Canha drives in four runs vs. Phillies

NEW YORK — Entering this season, one of Mark Canha’s individual goals was to add power to his game. A prolific home run hitter during stretches in Oakland, Canha went deep just 13 times during his first year with the Mets — his lowest full-season total in half a decade. He knew he was capable of more.

The dawn of this season, however, brought much of the same. Struggling to put the ball over the fence, Canha more recently had begun struggling in general, falling to eighth in the Mets’ lineup (when he found himself in it at all) and entering Wednesday’s play with a .233/.318/.360 slash line.

So it was heartening for both the team and the player to see Canha drive home all the Mets’ runs in a 4-1 win over the Phillies at Citi Field on Wednesday. The veteran hit a two-run homer off Aaron Nola in the third inning and added an opposite-field, two-run single in the fourth, amassing more RBIs than he had in his previous 23 games combined.

The support was plenty for resurgent starter Carlos Carrasco, who went six strong innings to improve his ERA to 1.42 over his last two starts.
