Randy Arozarena hits walk-off homer as Rays beat Twins

ST. PETERSBURG — After Isaac Paredes and Taylor Walls turned a tremendous double play to keep the game tied in the ninth, Randy Arozarena made sure the Rays walked off with a 2-1 win over the Twins on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field.

After being shut out for eight innings by a whole-staff performance from the Rays, the Twins scored off high-leverage reliever Jason Adam and loaded the bases with one out. But Paredes stabbed a hard grounder hit by Ryan Jeffers and made a throw to second base from his knees, then Walls reached to catch it and perfectly fired the ball to first baseman Luke Raley to complete the inning-ending double play.

That brought up Arozarena to lead off the ninth against hard-throwing right-hander Jhoan Duran. Arozarena promptly bashed Duran’s second pitch out to right-center field for his 12th home run of the season and first career walk-off homer.

The Rays’ 45th win of the season improved their home record to 28-6. They are just the fifth club in the expansion era to win 28 of its first 34 home games, joining the 1972 White Sox, ‘79 Expos and ‘98 Yankees (28 wins) and the ‘78 Red Sox (29).
