Pete Alonso injured list

NEW YORK — Two days after being struck on the left wrist by a fastball, Pete Alonso appears headed to the injured list.

Alonso was drilled on the left wrist by a 97-mph Charlie Morton fastball in Wednesday’s loss to the Braves in Atlanta and traveled to a New York the next day for X-rays. Those came back negative, but a source said Friday morning that Alonso is likely to be placed on the IL before the Mets’ series opener in Pittsburgh. He had undergone a bone scan Thursday following his X-ray, and the Mets have yet to release results of that test.

The Mets intend to release an updated diagnosis later Thursday.

The loss of Alonso, even for a brief period of time, would be a significant blow to a Mets team that has relied on him almost singularly for its power production. Alonso’s league-leading 22 home runs are the same amount as his next two teammates combined. He has accounted for 29 percent of the Mets’ homers and 18 percent of their RBIs.

Alonso has also been one of baseball’s most durable players since breaking into the league in 2019, appearing in 97.4 percent of the Mets’ games. He has landed on the IL only once before, missing the minimum 10 days in 2021 due to a sprained right wrist.

Before this injury, Alonso was on pace for 57 home runs. His quest to become the first National League player of his generation to hit 60 now appears far less realistic.

That, for the Mets, is the least of their worries. The team enters Pittsburgh having lost five consecutive games, including a sweep in Atlanta that dropped the Mets a season-high 8 1/2 games out of first place.
