Luke Voit hits towering home run in second Triple-A game for Mets

by admin

In just his second game with the Mets organization, Luke Voit announced himself on Wednesday night for Triple-A Syracuse.

Voit, who the Mets signed to a minor league deal on Monday, hit a two-run shot to left field in the top of the first inning of the Syracuse Mets’ 5-3 win over the Buffalo Bison.

The former Yankees first baseman took Paxton Schultz’s 1-2 pitch 400 feet for his first home run since signing the new deal.

Voit already had recorded a hit and two RBIs in his first game in Triple-A on Tuesday night.

He hit an RBI triple the night before against the Bisons when the right fielder lost sight of the ball in the top of the fifth.

If Voit’s bat continues to produce, he could end up finding his way back to the majors with the Mets, who are in a bit of a predicament at first base.

Pete Alonso is out for the next three to four weeks with a wrist injury and the Mets have had to run out Mark Canha and Mark Vientos at first base while he recovers.

Voit could prove to be a useful stopgap at first base until Alonso returns or a potential DH option.

Voit had struggled this year in the 22 games that he played for the Milwaukee Brewers.

The 32-year-old hit .221/.284/.265 in Milwaukee before the club opted to release him on June 2.

Voit had shown promise in years prior, including the 39 games that he played The Bronx in 2018 when he recorded 14 home runs. He also hit 22 homers in the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

He spent four seasons in pinstripes, hit .271 with 68 home runs and 182 RBIs before the Yankees traded him in the spring of 2022.

The Bombers traded Voit to the Padres, with whom he lasted 82 games before he was sent to Washington as part of the Juan Soto trade.

Voit signed a minor league contract with the Brewers in February.
