Mets’ Jeff McNeil misses cut at New York State Open

by admin

Mets star Jeff McNeil’s run in the New York State Open was short-lived.

McNeil failed to qualify for the championship round on Thursday after shooting 4-over 75 on the second day of the tournament taking place at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, L.I.

The pro ballplayer and amateur golfer shot 11-over par (153) through two days.

McNeil needed to finish in the top 60 or within 10 strokes of the leader to advance to the final day.

“Thank you @metropolitan_pga for the amazing opportunity to participate in the New York State Open during the All-Star break!” the Mets utilityman posted in Instagram with video highlights of his Open outing. “Now it’s time to get back to work, we’ll see you at Citi Field on Friday!”

Dylan Newman sat atop the leaderboard after the first two rounds at 8-under par (134).

Matt Lowe and Peicheng Chen were tied for second at 6-under.

Unlike the previous day when the Met had shot at par for a majority the holes, McNeil bogied six holes during the course of Wednesday’s round.

He did, however, avoid a disastrous double-bogie like he shot on the first hole on Tuesday and he birdied holes 4 and 18.

McNeil shot 1-over par on the front nine during Wednesday’s round, but was 3-over on the back half of the course.

McNeil had been able to partake in this year’s New York State Open thanks to the tournament falling in the middle of this year’s Major League Baseball All-Star break.

He failed to earn an invite to this year’s All-Star festivities in Seattle after hitting .253 and recording three home runs in the first half of the season.

The golfing ways of McNeil shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that knows a little about him.

McNeil holds a plus-1.8 handicap index at Monarch Dunes Golf Club and told The Post last April that he had played Bethpage in the past.

He also said that he had shot a 68 at Pebble Beach Golf Links and 69 at Cypress Point Club.

McNeil will at least get a day off on Thursday — the final day of the All-Star break — now that he is out of the tournament.

The Mets resume their schedule against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday at Citi Field.
