Nationals win rain-suspended series opener vs. Cardinals

ST. LOUIS — The Nationals didn’t muster a ton of offense early on at Busch Stadium, but it was still enough to cover them for nearly a full day.

The Nationals beat the Cardinals, 7-5, in 10 innings in Game 1 of their split doubleheader Saturday despite coming up with just three hits in the first seven innings. The teams resumed the game with two outs in the bottom of the third inning after it was suspended due to torrential rain Friday night.

Washington was the beneficiary of three Cardinals errors, one of which — a high throw from Nolan Arenado — helped them score three unearned runs in the fifth inning.

The Nationals beat Cardinals closer Jordan Hicks with a couple of runs in the 10th inning, as their bats heated up late in a game that finished nearly 21 hours after it began. C.J. Abrams set Washington up nicely with a leadoff single in the inning, and Lane Thomas poked a single through the right side to give the Nats the lead.
