July 18: Red Sox are beginning to look like buyers

Last year, the Red Sox tried to thread the needle of selling and buying by trading away Christian Vázquez, but adding Tommy Pham and Eric Hosmer. That doesn’t seem to be the case this year, as Rob Bradford of WEEI reported that the team is looking to add to its rotation and bullpen.

Bradford says the Sox likely won’t look towards adding some of the more expensive arms, and instead will focus on the next tier available, mentioning names like Pirates starter Rich Hill and White Sox relievers Reynaldo López, Keynan Middleton and Joe Kelly.

The news is a shift from earlier in the month when most of the news out of Boston was pointing towards the team potentially trading starter James Paxton, who will be a free agent after the season and has a 3.51 ERA in 11 starts this season. Now, it looks as if Paxton will be staying put, as he’s the leader of a Boston’s three-man rotation that’s missing Chris Sale, Tanner Houck and Garrett Whitlock.
